My mind definitely doesn't automatically go to the 'incest' option but coming to the show cold, I had really assumed that the two people in the car were 'buddies that were going to become something more' and nothing they said or did really contradicted that until they got to Defiance.
Even after what he told Amanda, it seemed that when Irisa was a child he took her under his wing but that didn't necessarily preclude them being able to have Feelings for one another. As you point out, it's entirely possible that her previously dead parents could show up again and there could be a bunch of reasons why Nolan - despite his prior intentions, is not actually a 'father' to her. I feel bad because I feel as though I am doing a disservice to the actors who are doing their best to portray a father/daughter dynamic but if you come into it without prior knowledge (like I did), it's easy to pick up the wrong end of the stick.
It will be interesting to see how the series and relationship unfolds i.e.
1. will canon completely blow the notion of a Nolan/Irisa ship out of the water; or 2. will the storylines/acting still allow shippers like me to glean a Nolan/Irisa ship in there despite the canon relationships with the various Official Love Interests
